When buying a second-hand carbon bicycle, the biggest priority is making sure there isn’t hidden structural damage. Carbon can look perfectly fine externally while having damage underneath.<\/p>\n

1. Inspect the frame carefully<\/strong><\/p>\nLook closely at:<\/p>\n
\n- Head tube and fork crown \u2013 check for cracks, chips or impact marks.<\/li>\n
- Top tube and down tube \u2013 especially underneath and around bottle-cage mounts.<\/li>\n
- Bottom bracket area \u2013 look for cracks, dents, compression marks or damaged inserts.<\/li>\n
- Chain stays and seat stays \u2013 inspect around the dropout and wheel contact areas.<\/li>\n
- Seat tube\/seat clamp area \u2013 check carefully for cracks caused by over-tightening.<\/li>\n
- Dropouts \u2013 look for cracks or damage around the axle and derailleur hanger.<\/li>\n
- Cable-entry points and internal routing holes \u2013 these can be stress points.<\/li>\n
- Any area with a deep scratch \u2013 don’t assume it’s cosmetic until you’ve established how deep it is.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Run a clean finger over suspicious areas (watch out for splinters!). Changes in texture, raised edges, soft spots, unusual depressions or sharp transitions can be more significant than a superficial scratch<\/p>\n

2. Look for signs of an accident<\/strong><\/p>\nAsk the seller directly:<\/p>\n
\n- Has it been involved in an accident or incident?<\/li>\n
- Has anything been replaced following an accident?<\/li>\n
- Has the frame ever been repaired?<\/li>\n
- Has the bike ever had a carbon repair?<\/li>\n
- Why are they selling it?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Be particularly cautious if the seller says “I’ve never crashed it” but there are fresh-looking marks on the bars, saddle, pedals, derailleur or brake levers.<\/p>\n

3. Check the components<\/strong><\/p>\nCarbon frame damage isn’t the only concern, make sure to check:<\/p>\n
\n- Wheels for cracks, curb abrasion and spin it in your hand to check for true.<\/li>\n
- Handlebars, particularly around the stem and bar\/stem clamp. If you can remove the bar tape.<\/li>\n
- Seatpost for cracks or crushing at the clamp point.<\/li>\n
- Crank arms and chainrings.<\/li>\n
- Derailleur and derailleur hanger.<\/li>\n
- Brake calipers\/discs.<\/li>\n
- Headset for play. Rock the front forks back and forth. This can be steerer wear.<\/li>\n
- Bottom bracket for looseness or gritty bearings<\/li>\n
- Hubs and bearings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Carbon handlebars deserve particular attention after any impact, because damage around the stem or controls can be difficult to see.<\/p>\n

\n- Torque-wrenched carbon components<\/li>\n
- Followed the manufacturer’s torque settings.<\/li>\n
- Used carbon assembly paste where appropriate.<\/li>\n
- Had the bike serviced professionally.<\/li>\n
- Replaced bearings\/cables\/chains recently.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Over-tightening is particularly relevant around seat clamps, stems, handlebars and bottle-cage mounts.<\/p>\n

5. Verify the Bike’s History<\/strong><\/p>\nWe strongly recommend getting:<\/p>\n
\n- Original purchase receipt\/proof of purchase<\/li>\n
- Frame serial number.<\/li>\n
- Review the bike spec online and compare before buying.<\/li>\n
- Service records.<\/li>\n
- Carbon repair documentation, if applicable.<\/li>\n
- Warranty information.<\/li>\n
- Confirmation that the seller actually owns the bike.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
For an expensive bike, check whether the manufacturer’s warranty is transferable.<\/p>\n

6. Check Wheels Separately<\/strong><\/p>\nDon’t assume that because the wheels spin and hold tension they’re structurally sound.<\/p>\n
Look for:<\/p>\n
\n- Cracks around spoke holes.<\/li>\n
- Cracks to the rim fairing.<\/li>\n
- Impact marks.<\/li>\n
- Damaged rim edges.<\/li>\n
- Uneven spoke tension.<\/li>\n
- Bent spokes or spoke nipples pulled through the carbon rim<\/li>\n
- Wheel run-out.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
A carbon wheel can still tension correctly despite having structural damage, so correct spoke tension alone doesn’t prove that a damaged wheel is safe.<\/p>\n

7. Consider a Professional Inspection<\/strong><\/p>\nFor an expensive carbon bike, this is probably the best money you’ll spend before buying.<\/p>\n
Ideally, have a reputable carbon specialist inspect:<\/p>\n
Frame + fork + seat post + handlebars + wheels<\/p>\n
If there is suspicious damage, ask whether they can carry out an appropriate non-destructive inspection. Not every carbon component can be reliably assessed using the same scanning method, so the inspection method should be appropriate to the construction of the particular component.<\/p>\n

- There is no credible ownership history.<\/li>\n
- The seller provides inconsistent explanations.<\/li>\n
- The bike has obvious crash damage but the seller says it’s “only cosmetic”.<\/li>\n
- You’re being pressured to pay immediately.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
